Tutor Drive!

We're setting the bar high - we want to "raise" 25 new tutors to commit to one day a week between now and June 12 (the last day of tutoring). That means you have three more weeks to join the elite corps of after-school tutors.
Thanks to Beth, Dave, Jondelle, Lucy, Matt S., Mike R., Scott E., and Nancy G. for stepping up over the past couple of weeks. And huge thanks, as always, to our drop-in regulars: Brady, Brian, Jon, Jeremy, Gus, Ali, Katie, Carlo, Jessica, Dan, Ted, Audrey, Bob, Paula, and those who have moved on for the summer: Heinz, Tess, Carolyn, and Kristine.
To help inspire you, we asked some of our all-stars: why do you tutor?

I tutor as a way to keep myself grounded while I'm working on my doctoral thesis. It's too easy to get caught up in the world of higher learning; it's nice to have a few hours every week where my primary concern is long division. And I do believe that one-on-one tutoring helps encourage kids to continue learning. Perhaps I will be partly responsible for some of these kids going on to graduate school, and I can take pleasure in the fact that I have passed on this suffering to the younger generation.

I had an English professor who advocated the social responsibility, as college literature students, to share with children our knowledge of English. So in each new city I live, I make an attempt to tutor children for whom English is a second language. I can easily waste a few hours a day on the Internet and feel irksomely unproductive, but my time is simply more valued here. So that is why I volunteer at 826Boston--that, along with the all the free Clif Bars and water-fountain water I can consume. Yum.
